2 Luglio 2008: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe ha il piacere di annunciare che da oggi è disponibile l’aggiornamento 2.40 per PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3?), un aggiornamento automatico del firmware che offre alcune delle caratteristiche più richieste dai giocatori. Insieme al servizio di gioco online gratuito* ed esclusivo di PLAYSTATION®Network, questo aggiornamento consacra il ruolo di PS3? come piattaforma d’eccellenza per il gioco online.

Innanzitutto l’aggiornamento 2.40 permette l’accesso durante il gioco alla XMB? (XrossMediaBar). Ciò significa che potrai accedere al menu di PS3? in qualsiasi momento nella maggior parte dei giochi, semplicemente premendo il tasto PS sul controller. Con l’aggiornamento 2.40 puoi controllare se i tuoi amici sono online (grazie al loro profilo utente), leggere e inviare messaggi, cambiare le impostazioni di gioco, il tutto senza dover uscire dalla partita in corso. Non potrai mettere in pausa una partita multigiocatore online a cui partecipano altre persone, ma potrai tornare a giocare quando vorrai, una volta che avrai finito di navigare nel menu. Oltre al potenziamento di queste funzionalità di collegamento, la capacità della Lista Amici è stata raddoppiata a 100 persone.

L’aggiornamento 2.40 assegna anche trofei come riconoscimento dei risultati ottenuti dai giocatori nell’arena online. Tutte le altre gare premiano i vincitori con dei trofei, quindi perché i giochi per PS3? non dovrebbero fare altrettanto? Molti dei giochi online offriranno trofei d’oro, d’argento e di bronzo, nonché un trofeo speciale di platino per chi riesce a conquistare tutti gli altri tre: il tutto sarà in bella mostra sulla XMB.

L’aggiornamento 2.40 è una ragione in più per iscriversi a PSN, il network online per gli utenti PS3? che ti permette di giocare online gratis*. The latest System Software Update is now ready for download for the PLAYSTATION 3. Here are the details of what this firmware accomplishes:

* Displaying the XMB? screen during gameplay
You can now access the XMB? screen while playing PLAYSTATION®3 format software.
* Searching the Internet from the XMB? screen
You can now perform an Internet search directly from the XMB? screen.

Other new or revised features in version 2.40 after the jump:

Overall

* You can now see the system clock on the XMB? screen. The date and time that were set under [Settings] > [Date and Time] are displayed.
* When using a keyboard, you can now clear the entire text entry field at once.
* The Users icon is now displayed when you press the PS button for an operation that cannot be performed.

Users

* You can now turn off the PS3? system from the XMB? screen using the [Turn Off System] option.

Settings

* You can now set the PS3? system to turn off automatically after updating the system software.
* [Reassign Controllers] and [Controller Vibration Function] have been added as options under [Accessory Settings].

Photo

* You can now print images from a playlist.
* You can now sort items that are grouped in a folder by month or year using the
[Film Date date down] or [Film Date date up] options.

Music

* You can now use a mini-size control panel while playing music.
* You can now play music content encoded in MP3 Surround format.*
* MP3 Surround can only be used when playing music content in Linear PCM format.

Video

* You can now use the [Frame Noise Reduction] and [Block Noise Reduction] settings for video content that is saved on the hard disk or storage media.
* You can now play upscaled video content that is saved on the hard disk or storage media. When the video content is played, it is upscaled automatically to match the screen size.
* Upscaling of Blu-ray Disc (BDAV) video content is now supported.
* For DTS playback on DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc media, DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 for DVD-Video and DTS-ES Matrix for Blu-ray Discs are now supported.*
* ?DTS? is a trademark of DTS Inc.

Game

* The procedure for quitting PLAYSTATION®3 format software has been changed.
* You can now collect trophies in games that support the trophy feature.

Network

* [Search] has been added as an option in the browse mode menu of the Internet browser.

Friends

* The number of Friends who can be added to a Friends list has been increased from 50 to 100.
* The [Information] screen has been redesigned and renamed as [Profile].

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We?ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
