Fin dal giorno della presentazione ufficiale, SONY annunciò la PS3 come la console più potente sul mercato, ben superiore alla console dell’antagonista Microsoft, la XBOX 360. Alla luce dei fatti le software house hanno avuto molte difficoltà a sfruttare tale potenza e nel caso dei giochi multipiattaforma si è rivelato più comodo fare dei porting da XBOX 360. In questi giorni pare che le cose stiano cambiando: sempre più sviluppatori scoprono aspetti della PS3 che potrebbero spostare gli equilibri a favore della macchina giapponese. Uno di questi è Jeff Carrol di THQ. Intervistato al THQ’s Gamers Day Event di San Francisco, ha dichiarato che durante lo sviluppo di Red Faction: Guerilla il team è riuscito ad ottimizzare l’Havok e raggiungere una fisica in game senza precedenti: il complesso hardware PS3 ha richiesto un sforzo notevole ma alla fine i risultati saranno davanti agli occhi di tutti.
Non si può che essere ottimisti, ma aspettiamo di toccare con mano, dal momento che si tratta sempre di dichiarazioni già fatte in passato da altri producers.

“We have been getting the physics system, the Havok system and our own proprietary destruction system running on the SPUs, as well as our animations. We’re seeing quite a decent speed improvement now that we’ve effectively got that running on the SPUs instead of the CPUs.””I think potentially you will. I think early on people are going to be struggling to figure out exactly how to make the PS3 work. But I think once they do they will see it’s a very powerful system underneath.”
